MORE GREAT LESS WHINE – STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCE SHOWCASING CAREERS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE AUSTRALIAN WINE INDUSTRY
In Week 11 students from Eastern Fleurieu High School took a mini bus down to the University of Adelaide Waite Campus to participate in the More Great Less Whine program. Students got to visit the Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Science Laboratory, see the Coombe vineyards, view the wine labs, participate in a sensory analysis and see a wide range of careers and facilities in action.
Sessions included fermenting with different yeasts, microorganisms in Indigenous fermentation, growing plants in the International Space Station, learning about research innovation, and Australian wine production and markets.
Eastern Fleurieu High School’s Agricultural Teacher Lisa Halling says the students loved hearing from a wide variety of different researchers about their pathways into the Wine Industry.
“The experiences and workshops offered to students were transformative. The students enjoyed the hands-on workshops, and the success of the course was evident from their increased interest in university life. We were made feel very welcome on campus, which enhanced student participation. The students and teachers really enjoyed this experience and we cannot wait to come back again!”
Thanks to the University of Adelaide, Wine Australia and the Australian Wine Research Institute for sponsoring this experience.
