The biannual conference on all things barley was held last week here in Adelaide.
This year’s theme was ‘Harvesting the potential of barley’, with the idea of sustainability threaded through the program. The goal was to address future industry needs at all levels and to encourage young scientists and future industry leaders.
Among many presentations, the program hosted many speakers, notably A. Prof Stuart Roy speaking for the ARC Training Centre for Future Crops; Dr. Megan Shelden on salt stress effects on root growth in barley; and Dr. Miriam Schreiber, who spoke to barley genetics, genomics and developmental phenotypes.
Another highlight was PhD student Jack Kelly winning the prestigious Paul Johnston Memorial Trust Award for his work in the Australian barley industry. He presented his work, ‘Harnessing Strigolactones to Improve Barley Architecture and Yeild’.
Congrats to Jack, and to all the Waite representatives at the conference this year!
